With 25 years, Juan Carlos Puello is the youngest musician in the band of Ondatrópica. Known as ‘El Chongo’, this percussionist from Cartagena carries the groove in his blood. Coming from a musical family, he interprets various percussion instruments, from congas and the ‘tambor alegre’ (joyful drum), to the ‘caja vallenata’. His musical exploration covers all the styles from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast.
He’s recognized for being the percussionist in the band Sidestepper. He has also played along Petrona Martínez, Maria Mulata, Alé Kumá, and is currently promoting his own proyect: ‘El Chongo de Colombia”. Besides playing percussion, he plays percussion and does beatbox at the same time.
“To record with the very best is special for me”, he comments between smiles while summing up for us his experience at the studios of Discos Fuentes, where every single sound of Colombia’s tropical music has been covered by many great maestros.
“We’ve even recorded Cumbia mixed with Champeta. Everyone will dance to this music; when it plays, your body will vibrate”.
